Organic by Jens Ingvarsson

Written by Marius Troy on December 22nd, 2010

A month has passed since Jens Ingvarsson last shook up Ben Trovato with his sizzling hot Do Not Disturb. Since then he’s got signed to the NYC based agency Production Department, and now he’s back with an even more daring story in Organic, showing off shoes by Christian Louboutin and lingerie by La Perla.

This is in fact the third time Jens is featured on BT, making him the most frequent contributor.

Oh please, what’s up with Ben Trovato?! Marius, please, I want old good times, when quality of this blog was superior and not all this flood with boring terry-richardson-wannabe photographers and identical frozen skinny models.

I got to agree. This is lame. In fact the whole site is starting to get lame. I don’t know if these shoots are supposed to be shocking somehow or what, but the photos are really starting to seem formulated across the board. I’m starting to think it’s not Ben Trovato unless a nipple makes an appearance. If there’s anything starting to tie BT together, it’s the sheer nothingness…meaningless photographs taken of people who emit nothing and who the viewer doesn’t care about. Where’s the relationship between the subject and the photographer? This is empty and not intentionally which would make it a statement. This is what we get when everyone with a high end digital camera is a photographer. It takes a lot more than gear, a laptop and a copy of Lightroom to be a photographer.

I’m not trying to slam Jens specifically, this is a widespread comment. The “voyeuristic fetishism thing” on this site is starting to get really old.

Yet again, there is no better sign of online success than a bunch of anonymous commenters telling you how much you suck.

Jeff to quote another blog ” Like it or not, fashion and nudity go hand in hand like peanut butter and jelly or a photographer and their camera. For 2010, risquéness hit a whole new level with nuns, bondage and even a lesbian wedding hitting the editorial scene……..etc.”

What about this qualifies it as a fashion spread? Is it because she happens to be wearing shoes in a few of the shots? If you want to call it art, fine…but fashion?

Meh. Got to agree with Duff, Jeff & Danielle.

Nothing about this is interesting, there’s no story, she looks plastic, and puleeez as if it is NEW. Shock art was like, four decades ago guys. Move on. Come up with something new. Stop re-iterating CLICHES. I want to come to this blog to be inspired, not to be depressed at the lack of GENUINE boundary pushing going on.

All I can say is… I like the shoes.

Had to comment on here after reading the critics. Not sure what you all are looking at but if you look past the nudity you’ll see some great composition, lighting, and an amazing grasp of skin tone. The shoes, milk, etc are all just bonus. Jens must be doing something right and the model adds outstanding support.

  15. Yoram from Berlin SAYS:

I’m somewhere in the middle of the commenters. I like the images a lot I think they’re quite strong. I also REALLY like that BT shows photographic spreads that use the language of fashion photography. They don’t all have to be actual fashion editorials, I do the same thing in my work… I use the language (models, MUA Hair, styling, lights, etc) but I don’t necessarily shoot it for mags every time… So Marius and BT showing work like this makes it a place I come back to every time a new spread gets published…

…but I’m growing a little tired of certain styles.

I feel bad leaving a critical comment on a site where the subject of my criticism will read it, but I am “over” the on-axis flash look that Terry Richardson has made his own. I know it’s highly en vogue right now, in no small part because it emulates the amateur images we’ve become accustomed to on Facebook and MySpace. Jens, you do great work within that look (I checked out your site) but unfortunately it is a style that a lot of other Shooters use… Your work stands out because your models, styles and make-up work well within that particular look (really LOVE the Do Not Disturb story)… but nonetheless as a fellow photographer I’ve seen too much of that one style over the last two years.

The other style I’m hitting the wall on visually is the fake faded old film look… It was served a death knell with the rise of Hipstamatic and other apps, which means everyone can get that look. Again, there are photographers who are doing great work within that look because they avail themselves of top talent to contribute, and because they have a great eye… but it’s tired and shot.
