Photography by Ann He

Written by Marius Troy on March 31st, 2011

She’s 16 years old, based out of Dallas, and she takes beautiful pictures. Ann He is truly what Ben Trovato is all about: -an extraordinary up and coming and talented photographer. She says her inspiration is somewhat like a melting pot of beautiful imagery she comes across online, the mood that certain music evokes, and most of all the models she works with: “- I used to dream up elaborate sets and visualized each frame in my mind, but now I just arrive on a shoot tabula rasa and work with what is happening in that moment.

Ann started shooting a couple of years ago, but shifted her focus towards more fashion and portraits last summer. Since then her work has been featured in both Youth Vision Magazine and Elle Girl Korea, and she’s got new editorials coming up in DMAG and N.E.E.T. Magazine soon. And right now? “- Right now I’m in the process of planning and setting up many shoots with beautiful people and beautiful locations. Besides fashion, I also hope to focus more on candid photos and also artistic concepts. I feel that taking a break from the demands of fashion will help bring me closer to my own vision and photography.

Here’s some of her work:

It’s a little disconcerting that this girl is featured yet the photographer she so blatantly copies from, Nirrimi, gets no love. Not saying this girl’s work isn’t good, but she should really find her own style…

    @Jess:

It is not often that we comment on our own posts, but this needs to get addressed.

To blatantly claim she is copying Nirrimi shows your ignorance. Yes, I agree, there are a lot of similarities between the two, they are both young, talented, and they have similar style. But the photography of Ann He is original and of great quality. She is 16 years of age(!), appreciate her talent rather than try bringing it down.

If Nirrimi wanted to be featured on Ben Trovato, she would have already been on here.

I think Jess is kinda right. A see a lot of Nirrimi original ideas here, yet Ann He works seems more fragile and alive to me. I will say Ann He should find her own IDEAS.
Anyway, I didn’t know her till today but I like her pics and will take a look to her complete porfolio.

  6. alezayas SAYS:

plus, yes! she’s only 16! with a lot of road to walk! but if you check her web you’ll see a great body of work and beautiful images all over. At that age I was still trying to figure out less important things.

  7. James Fear SAYS:

Great images, but I feel that she hasn’t quite got the magic of Alexandra Sophie…Yet.

  8. Jemima SAYS:

Why does anyone have to live up to anyone else when photography is so subjective and we all have different styles? If this girl has taken her inspirations from another photographer then so be it….she is so young and will find her own style in time, the best work has been produced by following another photographers lead…

  9. Emily SAYS:

Her work is amazing! She’s going to be a star, definitely one for the future!!

  10. Bruno SAYS:

I don’t really care to state or think that she’s copying anyone blatantly. That said, all these photos are, for the most part, extremely reminiscent of Flickr and websites alike. I admittedly love the leotard girl with flower in mouth photo but that’s about it.

  11. Angela SAYS:

I love the vintage feel she brings to her photos – both in the subject and the colouring of the images. Her multiple exposure/overlays are also visually stunning.

  12. Dan SAYS:

I also immediately associated the style, look and feel with Nirrimi’s and a few others who shoot the same recycled style over and over…

Not bad for a 16 yr old, but been there, seen that, done that…

  13. Miss Sophie SAYS:

Nirrimi gets no love? lol. I think she got enough love and it’s now time to show some other people work :) Thank you for showing us Ann He work that is wonderful!

  14. ant SAYS:

Ann He is an artist. She believes in what she has to offer the world. There is noone in this world that doesn’t look up to, or is inspired by someone else work. I believe everyone should have the liberty to express themselves in whatever way they damn well please. even if the work resembles that of someone so admirable or even iconic. I feel an artist work is never the same, it evolves day by day.

  15. Michelle SAYS:

I can’t believe there are haters here. This photographer is very young. When I was 16 I was smoking pot and skipping school. The fact that she knows how to use her camera, work with light, seems very good with composition is amazing. If she’s inspired by someone else’s work, so what? What photographer hasn’t been, especially when you’re just beginning.

I think her photos are beautiful and her processing is very nice.

People, have you seen Ann’s work?! It’s stunning- don’t pretend it to be anything less.

  18. Freja.S. SAYS:

I’m not saying that she’s bad or anything. She’s got good light and composition. But photography is not only about flawless technique.

What happens here is that she lacks originality, and that’s a big flaw. All of her pictures — ALL OF THEM — are blatant copies of Nirrimi (as often cited), Kitty Gallanaugh, Emily Tebbetts, Eleanor Hardwick, David Urbanke, among others.

It’s okay to be inspired by photographs, but it’s definitely not ok to just go around and copy them through and through.

I serisouly don’t want to buy a magazine and see a fashion spread with images I’ve seen before in other magazines. Isn’t fashion about originality, fresh ideas?

I wish I’d seen just a little bit of originality here. You know, it doesn’t hurt to brain storm and come up with your own ideas.

She’s not gonna be big like this. I am disappointed.

  20. ondressingup SAYS:

These are beautiful, I agree but if we’re talking about my choice of teenage photography prodigies with bursting flickr accounts, my money is totally on Mary Robinson (http://www.flickr.com/people/mryrbnsn/) who burns camellias with lights, chucks skulls and skeleton parts at her sisters, and infuses her photos with a delicious, innocent morbidity. Pretty pictures are easy but pictures that tackle big issues are more interesting.

  21. bob SAYS:

I’m sorry, but if you didn’t tell me this was ann he then i would have thought they were by nirrimi. these are pretty, but that’s about it. this is all kind of nirrimi’s fault for giving away her curves anyway. now there’s nirrimis everywhere.

  22. elroy SAYS:

wow i’m a little suprised to see that kind of comments here.
I really like Ann’s work, and i didn’t even know Nirrimi’s work before, maybe it’s because i don’t use flickr. Whatever.
It’s too easy if you want to empty somebody’s work from his substance, all frames are staged anyway, especially for Nirrimi’s stuff, and we still have no idea of the way Ann or Nirrimi works with the models, the process, the ideas developping behind…
I wouldnt suspect Ann to copy anything, for me Ann’s work also conveys great emotions and stories and i’m happy that this blog made me discover her beautiful stuff. After that, discussing who has been the first teenage photographer to shoot someone throwing confettis, or making a double exposure with a close up of flowers and then the portrait or playing in a certain way with water reflections is pure bullshit.
Try to find the first photographer who made a fashion shoot using indian feathers and theme if you have time to loose.
For one it’s pretty harsh to come up with judging comments like that (“flawless technique” ? wtf ? :D) and two it will never help anyone with questionning his/her approach of photography or art in general.

And about a VERY bad internet/blog habit : could criticising people please also leave their website details and all so that we know who we are talking to ? My name is elroy and i’m not a photographer, i just shoot images on my spare time. And this girl kicks asses. So does Nirrimi btw. and so does this blog ! Let there be love ^^

  23. chris SAYS:

I’m 100% sure people were shooting like this before nirrimi was alive.. she didn’t originate this style.. you do realize nirrimi is young as well right?

also.. when shooting film depending on what you shoot with.. it looks like this already
this look is inspired by the look of film..

    stop being fucking retarded

  24. Cassidy SAYS:

Ann He’s work is BEAUTIFUL. No offense but I get real sick of seeing “Nirrimi this” and “Nirrimi that” every time a new upcoming artist is featured. Who cares? This is a beautiful feature about ANN and NOT Nirrimi, so just let the talented kid have her limelight and stop thinking that every concept is immediately from Nirrimi’s mind. Every photographer can be inspired by other photographers and sure, people’s work may be “similar” but it’s just fucking rude to attack this girl this way. Leave her alone you cruel little army of pro Nirrimi work, it’s a free world and Ann is fabulous!

    April 3rd, 2011

  25. Margarette SAYS:

Ann is extremely talented! She’s also a great person. But I do have to agree with some other people here: her style is quite “been there, done that.” I also feel that she only takes pretty photos of pretty girls; there’s no feeling evoked when I look at her pictures.

That said, she does have potential, and I’m sure she’ll grow and mature wonderfully as a photographer.

Time to get a Rep Ann, Youve got their attention. :)

  27. Jillian SAYS:

We live in a society made by the media, we are all fed by the same images every day; people can get to the same idea even though they live in different countries, and cultures.
Still, I do believe there’s a difference between having similar ideas, and masking the work of somebody else as your own; is not about the colours, is about the entire feeling.
When I first saw Ann He’s photos, I couldn’t help but to think in Nirrimi’s own, at first I thought that it was just an idea, part of the photography movement; but then I look deeper into her work, and yeah I do believe she is copying her. One thing is to be inspired by her work, and other thing is trying to “be” it.

    April 10th, 2011

  28. ellyn SAYS:

Wow this is so silly. I am a big fan of Nirrimi’s and Emily’s and I did not think of their work when I saw these. I think some of the images are generic but I think 5 and 18 are particularly interesting. It’s not like Nirrimi owns the right to every photo of young girls with long hair.

    May 22nd, 2011

  29. Erica SAYS:

I don’t even think Ann He’s work is that similar to Nirrimi’s.

I feel like Coco Chanel’s comment, “he who insists on his own creativity has no memory”, is particularly apt here.

Many thanks to Marius for bringing Ann He and other cool photographers to my attention.

  33. Simone SAYS:

These are so amazing, beautiful works!!! Similar to Nirrimi’s but still with her own, very unique style!! She incorporates a great art into these photos. They are so full of colour and texture!! I adore these, now one of my new favourites!

    August 4th, 2011

  34. Jenny SAYS:

Are you haters serious? Nirrimi did not invent this emotive film style. If Ann’s work was a pathetic blatant copy of Nirrimis, she wouldn’t be producing such amazing imagery.
Also, how many of you so called “photographers” aren’t inspired by other photographic styles? Emotive film photography is currently in, and when done to this standard, is beautiful.

    August 4th, 2011

  35. Arianna SAYS:

That’s right guys, shooting pretty girls at a wide aperture and editing colours for a surreal vintage-y feel is completely 100% unique to Nirrimi, and nobody else did that before she stepped onto the scene, ever.

Give me a break. Ann’s work is fantastic. Stop cutting her down. There are no frame-by-frame copies like you’re claiming. Absolutely none. Her photos are all her own visions, and they’re absolutely beautiful.

  36. Xe SAYS:

If the publics first reaction is .. This lOoks too much like another’s work , then it looks too much like another’s work. If you’re going to work and present your work to the public don’t argue when you have a differing reaction other than love….. You are showing your work off to THE PUBLIC don’t criticize us b/c we spot a red flag… Ugh!!! I’m so sick of ppl devoting time to posting and submitting things to the Internet and then having complaints about the audience and the court of public opinion….. Get over yourselves* and your narrow mindedness that everything is going to be received well!!

    August 5th, 2011

  37. lara SAYS:

i do totally agree with freja! i am also getting bored by seeing a weak copy of nirrimi, there are enough other photographers using that style right now, i think nirrimi is doing a good job but trying to follow it 100% (i really don’t see any originality here) is just lame. use your own brain. photographers need to have a strong vision to be succesful.

    August 5th, 2011

  38. Lily SAYS:

Ann He is sixteen years old. Even if, to your eyes, her work appears to be a ‘rip-off’ of Nirrimi’s, it is important to bear in mind that this girl is only at the beginning of her creative adventure. To criticize and slander a young artist for exploring themes and concepts that inspire joy within them is a terrible shame, and will ultimately achieve nothing but pain and confusion. Instead of ridiculing this movement for its widespread support and popularity, pause to consider why it is so well-received.
If the infinite potential of the aspiring generation is to be, we must allow them the freedom to realise it.

  39. KATE SAYS:

Every photographers work is completely original. You know why? Because that moment is completely original. The moment, the model used, the person behind the lense, the time of day, the stories behind the scenes .. are all completely original and unique to that day and its photographs produced. The moment would never have happened if those people didnt come together to create it. That is what I find beautiful about photography.
The concept may be similar to many photographers, but jeeeez .. the world is full of trees, city scapes, fields, cute houses, flowers, youthful girls and sunshine.
The editing style is not unique to one person either. It is just one style of photography that does not belong to any one person.

    September 9th, 2011

  40. Nicole SAYS:

So…if I took a film photograph of my sister in my garden, and she was skinny, white and had long hair, would I too be accused of being unoriginal? This is pathetic. I’ve been a follower of both Ann He and Nirrimi’s work long before either were interviewed for magazines or had more to their name than a few Flickr/DeviantART followers, and neither of them invented this style of photography, let alone copied it. Both are so outrageously talented and the only similarities are the fact that the subjects are all white females with hair. People need to get over themselves. You can’t copyright the feel of film or the subject of a skinny white girl. Where did everyone’s respect go? How can any young person even dare to create if people like you scrutinise their work and accuse them of unoriginality over a colour palette?
